Every year, it was the same thing. Runny noses, dry, itchy skin, and a cabinet full of products with ingredients I couldn't pronounce that still weren't working. I kept thinking there has to be a simpler way.

So, I started researching, crafting, and testing until I found recipes I could trust, that didn't cost a fortune, and my whole family could actually use. That's how Milk and Meadow was born.

Tallow

What exactly is tallow? Rendered beef fat, whipped into the oldest moisturizer on earth. If that sounds strange, you're not alone — read the story behind our tallow and you'll get it. Your skin already knows what to do with it.

Will it clog my pores? Tallow gets along with skin's own oils, and most people find it sinks right in instead of sitting on top. Everybody's skin is different, though — if you're breakout-prone, patch test on a small spot first.

Does it smell like beef? Nope. Properly rendered tallow is neutral. The scented versions smell like their scent; the unscented smells like nothing at all.

4oz or 6oz — what's the difference? Just the size, same recipe. The 6oz is the better value if you use it daily. The 4oz is perfect for trying it out — or for gifting.

How do I use it? A pea-sized amount, warmed between your palms, pressed into damp skin. A little goes a long way — one jar lasts.
The salves

What's the difference between the four salves? They're the specialists; the tallow is the everyday. One tin, one job:

  • Wound Healer — for rough, worked-hard skin: cracked hands, scraped knuckles, tender spots.
  • Eczema balm — for dry, itchy, irritated patches (winter's specialty).
  • Bug bite balm — for the itch after the bite.
  • Acne balm — a dab on breakouts. Not sure which one you need? Take the tallow quiz below.

Salve or tallow — which do I need? Tallow is your daily, all-over moisture. Salves are what you reach for when something specific needs attention. Most people end up with both.
Elderberry syrup

How do I take it? A spoonful daily through the sick season — straight, or stirred into tea. Follow the label for serving size.

Does it need to be refrigerated? Yes, after opening. It's made like food because it is food.

Why small batches? Because it's cooked fresh, not warehoused. When a batch sells out, the next pot is already on the stove — but it takes time. That's the deal with the real thing.
Fire cider

How do I take it? A shot in the morning — straight, or in warm water with honey if you're easing in.

My eyes watered. Is that normal? That's the Cayenne doing its thing. It's supposed to wake you up.

What's in it? Cayenne, ginger, garlic, and more good sharp things, steeped in apple cider vinegar and finished with honey. Read the story behind our fire cider for the full 2,400-year version.
Soap

Where's the soap? It's curing! Real cold-process soap needs weeks on the rack before it's ready. Back in November — join the email list and you'll hear about it first.

Is your soap made with lye? Yes — all real soap is. Lye is what makes saponification happen (that's the process that turns oils into soap). If that makes you nervous, no need to worry: 24–48 hours after the soap is made, the lye is completely gone. All that's left is soap and glycerin.

Is everything really handmade? Yes — small batch, made by me in Colfax, Wisconsin. When something sells out, the next batch takes time. That's not a marketing line, it's just how handmade works.

Do you offer free shipping? Free shipping on all orders over $75.

Can I avoid shipping if I'm local? Yes! Select pickup at checkout and we'll message or email you when your order's ready, with day and time details.

Can I get a discount for signing up for emails? Yes — sign up and you'll get 10% off your first order. (Our subscriber-only sales, like the Last Harvest cleanout, are a separate thing entirely.)
Ordering & policies

What's your return policy? At this time, we don't accept returns on any products because of their natural properties. We stand by what we make, so in extreme cases a store credit may be issued. Thank you for understanding!
